Privacy Policy

I take your privacy seriously. I am not interested in tracking you or analyzing or selling your personal information. I rely on you to follow me, not the other way around. This privacy policy outlines the limited data that I do collect from you, in order to correspond and to maintain the security and functionality of this site.

Who I Am

I am the ThoughtMonster. This is my website, and its address is: https://thoughtmonster.org. You may contact me here.

What personal data I collect and why I collect it

I collect the personal information that you provide if you use the contact, comment, or subscription forms on this site, which includes your name and email address. This site will also collect your IP address and browser user agent strings in order to monitor the security of the site.

The IP address of visitors, user ID of logged in users, and username of login attempts are conditionally logged to check for malicious activity and to protect the site from specific kinds of attacks. Examples of conditions when logging occurs include login attempts, log out requests, requests for suspicious URLs, changes to site content, and password updates. This information is retained for 60 days.

Comments

When you leave a comment on the site, I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also your IP address and browser user agent string, which help to detect spam.

Because this website uses the WordPress CMS, an anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture, if you are using the service, is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

If you use the form provided on this website to contact me, your name and email address will be collected for the purpose of sending me your message. This enables me to respond to you. Your IP address and browser user agent string are also collected to enable spam detection.

Cookies

When you visit this site, it will set a temporary cookie for the duration of that visit, to enable the core functionality of the site. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

If you leave a comment on the site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies are optional and will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, it will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, the site will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

This site does not use analytics to track you. I care more about privacy than I do about marketing.

IP Monitoring

This site collects your IP address, in order to monitor and protect against brute force and other attacks that might attempt to undermine site security. Your IP address information is logged for 30 days, after which it is deleted.

With whom I share your data

This site is scanned for potential malware and vulnerabilities by Sucuri’s SiteCheck. We do not send personal information to Sucuri; however, Sucuri could find personal information posted publicly (such as in comments) during their scan. For more details, please see Sucuri’s privacy policy.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on my website (if any), I also store the personal information that you provide in your user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). As website administrator, I can also see and edit that information. It is retained indefinitely or until you ask me to remove it.

Security logs are retained for 60 days.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data that I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data that I hold about you. This does not include any data that I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. If you use the form provided on this website to contact me, your name and email address will be emailed to me with your message.

Your contact information

If you use the form provided on this website to contact me, your contact information will be stored in my email, with your message until our email correspondence has concluded or until you ask me to delete your information.

Additional information

How I protect your data

If you use the form provided on this website to contact me, SSL encrypts your message between this site and its server, and then PGP encrypts your message between this site’s server and my email inbox, which is both encrypted and password protected. Your IP address is stored by this site, separate from any personal information, and password protected.

What data breach procedures we have in place

In the unlikely event of a data breach, I will notify you that your information, your name, email address, and/or IP address, have been illegally acquired by a third party.

What third parties we receive data from

I do not receive data about you from third parties.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

I do not profile users of this site. Security decisions that use your IP address are automated. For instance, if you repeatedly attempt to access this site as an administrator, your IP address will be automatically blocked from the site. Don’t try to hack it, and I’ll never even look at your IP address, which will be automatically deleted after 30 days.

Patreon features in this website

In order to enable you to use this website with Patreon services, I save certain functionally important Patreon information about you in this website if you log in with Patreon.

These include your Patreon user id, Patreon username, your first, last names and your vanity name. Additionally, the id of your campaign at Patreon and your campaign’s Patreon URL are also saved.

If you request that your data be deleted from this website, this data will also be deleted and Patreon functionality will not work. You would need to register on this website and log in to this website with Patreon again in order to re-populate this data and have Patreon functionality working again.
